Over 6 years ago we used to have a group of doves that would feed around the bird feeder. There were usually 4-7 birds walking around on the ground in the morning or late afternoon. The problem with ground feeding is that area cats often lurk in the bushes or ground cover around the area just waiting for the sport. I knew this because during that time I found three tufts of feathers on the ground even though we tried to keep cats out of the yard. I’m not a fan of people that allow their cats to roam the streets, because their not like dogs and can’t be walked. In any event, the doves are back, feeding as the previous doves did. We have only two now, but I expect as word gets around available groceries will attract more.
